The Three Orange-Peris
Myths
LLAH, the most gracious God, whose dwelling, place is the seventh heaven, completed the work of creation. Seven planes has the heaven and seven planes also the earth--the abode of evil spirits. In the heavenly ways reside the peris,
or good spirits; in the earthly darkness the dews, or evil spirits. The light of heaven is in conflict with the darkness of
earth--the peris with the dews. The peris soar to heaven, high above the earth; but the dews sink down into the darkness under the earth.
or good spirits; in the earthly darkness the dews, or evil spirits. The light of heaven is in conflict with the darkness of
earth--the peris with the dews. The peris soar to heaven, high above the earth; but the dews sink down into the darkness under the earth.
Mountains bar the road to heaven, and only the good spirits can reach the Copper Range, whence the way is open to the Silver Mountains and the Hills of Gold. Evil spirits are blinded by the ineffable radiance of heaven. Their dwelling place is the depths of the earth, the entrance to which is at the spring of waters. There tarry the white and the black sheep, into whose wool the evil spirits penetrate, and are so conveyed to their realm on the seventh plane. On the white sheep they return to the earth's surface. Peris and dews are powerful, and both were witnesses of the creation of earth's original inhabitant, the First Man.
Allah created the First Man, and appointed him the earth for his dwelling-place. And when the First Mortal appeared upon the earth and the peris rejoiced over Allah's wonderful work, the Father of Evil beheld it, and envy overcame his soul. Straightway he conceived a plan whereby to bring to nought that beneficent work,
He would implant the deadly seed of sin in this favoured creature of the Almighty; and soon the First Man, all unsuspecting, received on his pure body the damnable spittle of the Evil One, who struck him therewith in the region of the stomach. But Allah, the all-merciful, the overcomer of all things, hastened to tear out the contaminated flesh, and flung it to the ground. Thus originated the human navel. The piece of flesh, unclean by reason of the Evil One's spittle having defiled it, obtained new life from the dust, and thus, almost simultaneously with man, was the dog created--half from the human body and half from the Devil's spittle.
Thus it is that no Mahometan will harm a dog, though he refuses to tolerate him in his house. The animal's faithfulness is its human inheritance, its wildness and savagery are from the Evil One. In the Orient the dog does not increase, for while the Moslem is its protector, he is at the same time its implacable enemy.
Legend
Once upon a time in Marmaris, somewhere in the southern coast of Turkey,a fisherman and the daughter of a King fell in love. However, like all of us know, the love between a fisherman and a princess simply would not get the blessings of her father. Because of this, they would meet secretly at nights. But the old King soon learnt about his daughter's nocturnal trysts. One night, he asked his soldiers to follow her. The soldiers returned and informed the King that every night the princess would leave the palace and go to a small bay out of town. She would signal to the fisherman at the other end of the bay by flashing a light and he would come to that light to find her. The King then ordered his soldiers to set a trap. They followed the princess, caught her and flashed a light to entice the fisherman. The princess managed to escape from the soldiers and ran as fast as she could to warn her lover. She realised though that it would not be possible to reach the fisherman if she were to run along the beach, so she thought she would swim. A miracle happened. Wherever she stepped into the sea, the water turned into sand; and the sand turned back into water whenever the soldiers followed her. But, as she was reaching her lover, a soldier's arrow meant for the fisherman struck her, killing her instantly. The people of Marmaris say that when the blood of the princess got mixed with the sea water, it changed the colour of the sand.
Folktale
time an old gardener had mounted his son upon an ass and was proceeding to the garden, himself on foot.
The met some men who said, "See this old pederast, how he has mounted the boy upon the ass; and is himself running alongside."
Whenever the old man heard this he made the boy alight and mounted himself.
Again they met some other folk, these likewise said, "Look at this heartless old man, he rides the ass himself and makes the poor child go on foot."
Whenever the old man heard this he took his son up in front of him.
Then some people saw them and said, "See this old pederast, how he has taken the boy up in front of him."
The old man heard this, and he put his son up behind him.
Again certain folks saw them and said, "See this old catamite, how he has taken the boy up behind him."
The old man knew not what to do, so he put his son down and alighted himself and drove the ass before them. The garden was near, and both of them were on foot, and they reached the garden before meeting with any others.
Fable
VIOLET AND THE IRIS
N the early spring, some one praised the Violet for its loveliness, telling it that it was so beautiful that it looked like an Iris. Believing this, the foolish Violet at once sent an ambassador to the Iris in order to make friends with the royal purple flower, because of this fancied resemblance.
The Iris returned this answer, "You are now beautiful with blossoms, while I—my flowers are still hidden in their tight-wrapped buds. Wait until I, too, am in blossom."
A few days later the lovely Violet faded and died; and when the Iris flowered, the Violet had completely disappeared.
Be content with your own blessings. While you are envying those of others, your own may vanish..
